E-Portfolio

Walking The Path of a Teacher

The journey is the destination...
To bring this e-portfolio and eventually this course to a fitting end I am trying to give an evaluation for this course and what I have learned.
First of all I have to say that the methods, media and field trips were very interesting and helped me understand the importance of new media in an always developing classroom. With students getting wired more and more in the last years it falls to schools and eventually teachers to teach them how to use new media in school and later in university or, after that, in their professional fields.  I thought that creating our own lesson plan was quite interesting but in this form the plans cannot be used for our "Referendariat" because of the strict regulations of the school department of Hessen. These lessons should be created in the way they could be beneficial for us in the beginning of our teaching. The usage of various internet sites and means of production and demonstration were very interesting, especially Wordle and Prezi. These are really helpful when it comes to catching students' attention because they come into contact with things to which they usually have no connection. It was also very important that we students could put our own opinions into the class syllabus. Everybody seemed very interested in new ideas and experiences of others. Some people may have even got another point of view and now include these into their teaching style. This leads me to the organization of the e-portfolio which was very liberal. We could actually include five tasks that were absolutely open for our own imagination. The focus could therefore be on specific topics or scattered across many fields of research. Even own opinions could be featured which makes the e-portfolio partially personal. The teaching style of Mrs. Güldenring was interesting because she kept the class organization quite liberal, too. The topic of a lesson was always clear but the route on which we could get to the actual goal was not strictly organized. It was quite fun to arrange the teaching session with partners or have a discussion about new media in classrooms and hear arguments for and against each point.
All in all I can say that this course helped me very much due to the fact that I will be working with new media a lot because my second subject is geography which is in fact a very special subject when it comes to new media. But also for my English lessons this course was quite helpful. I now know how to teach different topics in different classes without resorting to boring methods like vocabulary tests (which are not to be abandoned completely) or grammar lessons with only using the black board. I hope that the school department of Hessen will be more open to the means of teaching we learned in this course and that some of them can be used frequently later in my life as a teacher..
